Casuarina - 2005
Visual identity for the samba group Casuarina’s first album.

Casuarina was an unknown samba group about to release their first record. My job was to introduce them to a new audience by showing, in a glance, what the band was all about.

Musically, the band was beautifully turning classic samba songs into current sounding music. Visually, I wanted to do the same.

I photographed details of what a typical day in the life of a Malandro - a traditional character rooted in Rio’s culture - would look like. These old references were given a modern photographic treatment, to mimic what the band was doing to the music.

The result was a vintage/modern combination, which turned out to be the perfect look and feel for what the band was all about back then.

Casuarina recorded 7 albums so far. And I had the pleasure to work in all of them.
